Having to go to the hospital or a GP practice can be daunting enough at the best of times. It can be even more frightening in A&E waiting rooms, where background noises may be loud and the atmosphere stressful. This fact is made worse for people who suffer from a hearing impairment, especially if the receptionist or nurse who first attends to them does not realise that they have a hearing problem straight away. It can also be dangerous, as the information that the doctor passes on may be misunderstood by the patient, such as details about medication and surgery procedures.

The hospital/doctors surgery hearing loop system was developed to solve this problem. The hearing loop

is placed in locations where patients with hearing difficulties may need it, such as the waiting room or close to their bed if they are staying overnight in hospital.

Hospitals/doctors surgery practices should recognise the need for a hearing loop and ensure that one is installed near the entrance, so that hearing impaired patients can use the loop to communicate their problems and understand the solutions given by the nurse or doctor.
